the
City
AbuDhabi
BY HANAN SAYED WORELL
Rooted in a Bedouin desert culture, Abu Dhabi has been at the crossroads of East and West for millennia. Pearling contributed to much of Abu Dhabi’s economy in the early part of the twentieth century, but as the pearl trade declined in the 1930s, the focus shifted to oil exploration. Today, Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, is known as one of the wealthiest cities in the world, with oil reserves to last a century. For most visitors and newcomers to the city, however, life beyond the tourist attractions is an enigma. In Table Tales, we see the many faces of the city from the 1960s to the bustling contemporary city where art and business thrive. Featuring vibrant photographs taken around the city, in homes and restaurants, Table Tales is a glimpse of the colours and contrasts of this rapidly evolving city.
